- Rami Azzam too hot on the night bags couple of wins in SWS Seniors
- Alex Connor and Zaid Alami winners in the SWS Juniors
Rami Azzam proved to be unbeatable on a hot night of Sodi-W-Series (SWS) Senior racing at the Kartdrome on Monday, winning both his heats despite almost not making the start.
A few hours before qualifying Azzam was not even down to race as he “forgot the race was on” but a few no shows by other drivers gave him a break, which he seized and by the end of the evening scored two well deserved victories.
In both races he was chased hard by Hussain Umid Ali and and pole winner Atef Al Barwani, the trio in a different league to the rest. In both races Azzam led the way with Umid Ali second after holding off Al Barwani and very little to separate them as they crossed the finish line.
Behind the three pace setters, in the first heat impressive newcomer Dario Rubio finished fourth, ahead of an intense four-way battle which ended with Piotr Korykowski in fifth from Mario Herreros in sixth, Carsten Winter seventh, Hassan Ayyub eighth, Mohamed Al Ghurair ninth and Abdulla Al Ali rounding out the top ten.
In race two, behind the top three, Al Ali bounced back to finish fourth after pipping fifth placed Rubio to the finish line, ahead of Herreros in sixth, Winter seventh, Adrian Jones eighth, Karykowski ninth and Matt Walker tenth.
Rubio scooped the best newcomer for his efforts on the night.
Earlier in the evening, in the SWS Juniors, Alex Connor topped the points standings after the four heats, with Oliver Walton second and Leo Ardolino third.
In the action packed Superfinal, Walton and Connor battled it out at the front for most of the race, but the pair tripped up near the end which allowed Zaid Alami to pounce and snatch a well earned victory, with Khaleb Saab also making the most of the situation to finish second and Connor salvaging third, with Walton behind him in fourth and David Zandieh fifth.
Heat winners on the night included Ardolino, Walton and Connor who bagged two wins. Giacomo Caccia won the Final.
The next round of the SWS, the last before the summer break, takes place at the Kartdrome on Sunday, 24 May 2015.
The SWS Series at the Kartdrome uses Sodi RX7 and Sodi LR4 karts.
